EGGSHELL MEMBRANE

Eggshell membrane (ESM) is the thin membrane inside the eggshell, enclosing the egg white. This skin has a matrix of many organic compounds including glycoaminoglycans and other glycoproteins. Recently ESM has been identified as a new and potential food supplement. The commercial use of unfertilized eggs in the food industry results in vast amounts of eggshells as a byproduct.

 The most acknowledged active components of ESM are:

  • Collagen – a fibrous protein abundantly found in cartilage, connective tissue and skin. Collagen provides strength and elasticity to these tissues;
  • Elastin – a protein abundantly found in skin, cardiovascular, cartilage, and the spinal column. As its name implies, elastin gives tissue the elastic tension and ability to resume its shape after stretching;
  • Hyaluronic acid, Glucosamine, Chondroitin and other Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) – polysaccharides that are vital structural components of connective tissue, interstitial fluids and skeletal structures. GAG molecules characteristically offer high viscosity and low compressibility which are essential to the highly viscous fluids found in joint spaces that act as shock absorbers and protect the bone surfaces from jarring together under impact.
  • Transforming growth factor-β – a protein that plays a crucial role in cellular growth and differentiation processes;
  • Desmosine and isodesmosine – two little known peptides that are responsible for elastin’s elastic or “rubbery” properties.

BiovaFlex® eggshell membrane has been manufactured in the USA, using an all natural, patented mechanical process to separate the egg membrane from the egg shell. The egg membrane is further processed utilizing a patented process (developed Iowa State University Research Park) to yield the membrane’s nutritional components more available and water soluble.

BOSWELLIA SERRATA

Boswellia serrata, commonly known as Frankincense, is the resin from the trees of the genus Boswellia, native to Arabia and India. It has a long history of gum resin, an exudate of the tree, usually obtained by incisions made in the tree's bark. In India, the gum resin exudates of Boswellia serrata has been used in traditional Ayurveda.

The biological most active components in Boswellia serrata are the so-called ß-Boswellic Acids. The four major pentacyclic triterpenic acids identified in Boswellia serrate are:

  • β-Boswellic Acid (I)
  • Acetyl-β-Boswellic Acid (II)
  • 11-keto-β-Boswellic Acid (III)
  • Acetyl-11-keto-β-Boswellic Acid (IV)

Boswellin® Super is the most concentrated form of Boswellia found. It contains minimum of 50% ß-Boswellic Acids. and a minimum of 30% Acetyl-11-keto-β-Boswellic Acid (which is generally considered the most potent Boswellic Acid).

 HYALURONIC ACID

Hyaluronic Acid is an extremely large molecule (normally 1-5 million daltons) of repeating subunits of acetylglucosamine and glucuronate. HA is classified as a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) found everywhere in the body. Hyaluronic Acid is the primary agent responsible for the viscosity and lubricating properties of synovial fluid in joints, serving as the backbone of aggrecan proteoglycans, bound to core and link proteins.

Molecular size: Bigger is Better.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is commercially available in three different forms:

  • Hydrolyzed collagen
  • Enzymatic degradation of rooster comb
  • Microbial fermentation of rooster comb

HA from hydrolyzed cartilage is formed by the enzymatic degradation of Type II collagen from chicken sternal cartilage into very small fragments (50 to 10,000 daltons), with no high molecular weight material remaining. HA derived from hydrolyzed chicken sternal cartilage is characterized by extremely low molecular weights.

Another major type of HA used in dietary supplement products is prepared from dried rooster comb, a rich natural source of HA.  This material is claimed to be enzymatically denatured, with a molecular weight of 50,000 to 200,000 daltons in order to facilitate uptake. HA with a molecular weight of 50,000-200,000 daltons is regarded as low molecular weight HA..

The third major type of HA available for dietary supplement products is essentially purified HA from microbial fermentation (Streptococcus species) of rooster combs. Molecular weight is around 1 million daltons, which corresponds to native HA in cartilage and in synovial fluid.

 Hyal-Flex® hyaluronic acid is purified HA from microbial fermentation) of rooster combs. Molecular weight is around 1 - 1,5 million daltons.
